Feature wallpapers are big news. Decorating a wall in a bold statement wallpaper allows you to create a massive amount of interest in a room with really very little effort. Many of us will tend to decorate the one wall in a statement paper. You can always take a ‘leaf’ from the world of celebrity though. Nicky Hilton uses bright colours and bold patterns to liven up her Los Angeles home. “Great wallpaper can really make a statement.” says the fashion designer, who chose a banana-leaf print for her kitchen.
Personally, all I can say is “whoa!”. One thing is for definite, big fussy curtains would make this decorating scheme even busier. Window treatments can provide a welcoming calm yin, to the yang of a bold patterned wall. I have found some great wallpapers below and have teamed each with a couple of complimentary window blinds. All of the papers are in current ranges so if you see something you like then grab it now. And of course, don’t forget the blinds!
I love the freshness of this paper, it would be perfect in a sun drenched room. The green of the leaf has been highlighted through the roman blind, while the metal venetian tones in with the wallpaper’s off white background.
Possibly my favourite paper, so retro and stylish. The beige roller blind perfectly matches the background colour. For a stronger look, use a richly coloured blind, the deep colour of the roman blind makes as much impact as the wallpaper itself.
This wallpaper by Harlequin gives a luxurious feel with its gold pattern. Here I have teamed a soft to the touch roman blind to complement the sumptuous feel. Alternatively the gold venetian blind gives a cleaner look but teams with the pattern perfectly.
One for dog lovers everywhere! The obvious choice is of course a black or a white blind. I’ve used a black hardwood venetian blind and a simple white roller blind. Another idea would be to add a bold splash of colour, maybe using a calming green or a dark red.
This purple and red infused paper has true impact. I have chosen a light lilac venetian blind plus a merlot coloured roman. Other possibilities could be to highlight the dark brown stem of the flower or contrast completely with a white blind. We also have a popular dark purple roller blind.
Definitely a fun wallpaper. The wooden venetian adds a touch of sophistication while the blue roller blinds continues the fun, fun, fun theme.
Some final thoughts….
- Most wallpaper companies design a collection of papers that work with one another, pick papers from the same collection for guaranteed success.
- Try mixing plain and patterned wallpaper.
- Be daring with stripes, try hanging paper horizontally as well as vertically.
- Leafy woodland prints are big for 2009. (Nicky Hilton was right!)
- Textured wallpapers are making a return, perfect for bedroom glamour.
- Why not consider a jewel box room? A room with wall to wall bold paper.
